Smartphone-enabled Vision Testing Kits: The Future of Vision Care?

Today it seems that everything is available to us at the touch of a button. You need to look something up? You reach for your smartphone and Google it. You’re hungry but don’t have any food in the house? You reach for your smartphone and have someone deliver food to you from either your favorite restaurant or the grocery store!

The smartphone has drastically changed the way we interact with almost everything. Now, it seems like it is about to revolutionize the way we interact with our eye health.

EyeQue Personal Vision Tracker is at the forefront of it. With their new vision test kit (that conveniently clips right onto your smartphone) are they pioneering the future of vision care?

EyeQue Personal Vision Tracker: How it Works

The EyeQue is not your typical eye exam app. This kit comes fully stocked with an app that lets you save your eye tests to track any irregularities, a microscope to actually conduct the tests, and the ability to order your glasses online.

The way the EyeQue works is pretty simple. You attach the microscope to your smartphone so that it looks something like this. Then you take the eye test. Users of the EyeQue say that it’s more like playing a game than having an eye test done.

But in reality, these eye games are measuring your eyes for refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The tests use the same measurement techniques as eye doctors do, resulting in pretty accurate results.

Ordering Eyeglasses Online

Smartphone-enabled Vision Testing KitsThis device can be used to test your eyes at any time. This makes vision test extremely convenient and accessible to anyone. If one day you woke up and the prescription of your glasses seemed off, there would be no need to wait for a doctor’s appointment. You could just test your eyes and get the results from EyeQue.

And let’s say that from this test you find out that your prescription has changed. There’s no need to call you doctor, make an appointment, wait for your appointment, get the proper prescription and then order your glasses.

Think of how much you’re missing in all that time waiting on a new prescription!

The results from the EyeQue are ready immediately after the test is finished. There’s no waiting. Once you have the results, you can order the correct eye corrective wear online and right from your smartphone.

Who knew that you could do all this and not even have to leave your bed?

Of course, nothing is free but this device comes close. The app itself, which is compatible with iOS and Android, is free. The microscope is priced at $29.99, which costs less than a monthly smartphone bill.

When you first sign up, you’ll receive one free eye test, but every test after that is an additional $1.99. Even with the additional $1.99, the cost of this device doesn’t come close to an appointment with the eye doctor, which costs normally $50 for a refractive error test.

Not only is this device accessible for people who can’t get to their eye doctor or who don’t have time, it also allows those without healthcare or the means to pay for eye tests a chance to have their eyes checked.

Bringing Eye Care to the World

EyeQue isn’t stopping at just providing affordable and convenient eye care to Americans. They have branched out and have been working with a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands, TWOBILLIONEYES, to help bring low-cost eye care to people all over the world.

Though EyeQue’s Kickstarter campaign has now closed, they raised more than their $25,000 goal, thus have now pledged to donate three percent of their proceeds to TWOBILLIONEYES.

The non-profit organization is currently working to bring affordable eye care and the necessary corrective eye wear to Kenya.

EyeQue and Other Vision Test Kits: The Way of the Future?

All this begs the question, is EyeQue and similar vision test kits really the way of the future for eye care? To that, I say yes and no.

Yes, to the Future and Beyond!

Yes, because EyeQue is bringing affordable eye care to billions of people who need it but who couldn’t necessarily afford it before. They’re also doing it in a way that is convenient, which encourages people to get their eyes tested on their own terms.

This will hopefully inspire people who haven’t had regular eye exams or any eye exams to get their eyes checked. Even if it means just getting hooked on the “games”!

Because all the data from your eye tests are saved onto the Cloud, you can easily track your eyesight. This is a great tool because we can’t always determine if our eyesight is getting worse. It’s like seeing the same newly planted tree every day. You see it every day, but because the growth is so slow, you don’t actually notice it getting bigger.

You may not notice a gradual loss of vision until it’s too late to do something about it. With this tracker, you can immediately identify if there’s a problem. Then you can make an appointment with your eye doctor.

Not a Replacement for a Professional

However for all the good that EyeQue has brought us, this technology will never replace eye care professionals who are needed to perform comprehensive exams. But don’t worry. EyeQue emphasizes that the device cannot replace the proper eye care that is given by a professional.

Comprehensive eye exams or dilated eye exams are crucial for everyone. These eye exams are not just for detecting refractive errors. These exams will help keep your eyes healthy by detecting early warning signs for certain eye diseases.

Adults under the age of 40 should be getting these comprehensive eye exams at least once every two years (or more frequently if you have an existing condition). People over the age of 40 should be getting an annual eye exam from an eye doctor.

Smartphone-enabled vision testing kits like EyeQue are indeed the way of the future to a certain extent. These kits test for refractive errors, but fail to diagnose more serious vision conditions.

However, they bring affordable eye care to people who need it the most. With more kits like this on the market, we’ll be our way to having a nation and a world of healthier eyes!
