A Demonstration on Nearsightedness
One of the most common eye problems is myopia, but do we really understand it? This video demonstration on nearsightedness explains it all.

Some experts have estimated that nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population is affected by myopia, more commonly known as nearsightedness. Just as it sounds, nearsightedness means that you can see pretty well up close. But, while that sounds nice, the problem is that myopic eyes struggle to see objects at a distance.
This condition often worsens as you age. However, it can also be spurred by excessive screen time and not exercising your eye muscles regularly. That’s why doing eye exercises for nearsightedness is a great way to combat this problem and strengthen your vision overall.
Of course, not everyone turns to eye exercises as their first line of defense against myopia. Instead, most people wear prescription lenses or even get surgery to fix the problem. Corrective lenses are a great band-aid fix, and LASIK surgery might be effective for a while, but the risks often outweigh the rewards.
You may not have thought about it this way before, but your eyes are surrounded by and rely on muscles to work. Like all muscles, they need to be exercised regularly to function properly. In this article, we’ll first talk about the benefits of eye strengthening exercises for nearsightedness before going over a few easy ones you can try today.
This is a common question we get here at Rebuild Your Vision, and it’s not as straightforward to answer as we might hope. That’s because there are many different causes of myopia. The good news is that if your nearsightedness is caused by visual fatigue, eye exercises can be very helpful for you. However, if your myopia is either genetic or hereditary, eye exercises are going to be less effective. But they can still have some benefit for your vision.
Eye exercises can help in a few different ways:
Your lifestyle will also play a big role in the effectiveness of exercises. If you continue to have poor visual habits, like looking at a computer screen for too long, then the effectiveness will also be reduced.
Your diet is also really important to preserving and even improving your vision. Just like any other part of your body, getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals in your diet works wonders for your health. Without the proper nutritional building blocks, your eyes will deteriorate much more quickly.
There is a range of eye exercises for nearsightedness that you can easily implement into your daily routine. As with most habits, the benefits of eye exercises compound over time. It’s important to do them consistently and for the right amount of time – enough to strengthen your muscles but not so much that they become overfatigued.
Generally, you will want to take off your eyeglasses or contacts when performing these nearsighted eye exercises for maximum effectiveness. However, if you experience too much discomfort, you can start your regimen wearing your corrective lenses and gradually wean yourself off them over time.
Here are four exercises for people of all ages who want to treat nearsightedness. Kids with myopia will see significant benefits from doing these regularly. Similarly, adult myopia patients can experience a lot of improvement by adding these to their routine. While there isn’t a guaranteed way to cure myopia, doing these exercises should at least help you prevent or stop myopia from progressing and improve your quality of life.
This exercise will help you focus on objects that are far away from you and thereby reduce myopia symptoms. Start by standing in the middle of the room and keeping your back straight. Make sure you are facing a picture or something similar on the wall. While facing the picture, hold your index finger a couple of inches away from your nose. Focus your eyes on your fingertip, ensuring that your eyes are fully focused before you move to step 2.
Next, quickly move your vision to that picture on the wall. At first, the image will appear distorted. Keep looking at it until your eyes correctly focus on the picture. Repeat this 5-10 times per session for maximum effectiveness. Over time, increase the distance between yourself and the picture. This is a great way to reduce myopia and vision fatigue.
You will need a pencil for this exercise. Start by sitting down. Next, hold the pencil about six inches away from the tip of your nose. Rather than staring at the pencil, quickly glance at it and then look away to an object that is on the opposite side of the room. Do this for a few seconds and then quickly switch back to the pencil for a few seconds.
This is another exercise that you should do 10 times. Try to do it every day, and as you get better at it, transition to focusing on objects that are further away from you. Repeat this process 10 times and do it every day. As your eyesight starts to get better, start focusing on objects that are further away from you. Part of what makes this one of the best eye exercises for kids is that it is easily gamified – challenge your child to see how long they can increase that distance over time. Their eyes will thank you later!
This exercise to improve myopia will also ask you to sit down with a pencil. This time, hold the pencil away from your eyes until it gets to the point where it starts to double in your vision. Then, move it back slightly, just before this point. Imagine that there is a transparent tic-tac-toe board just in front of you.
Now, move the pencil and touch each of the imaginary squares before you bring the pencil back to the original position. As you’re moving the pencil, make sure that you track its movement with your eyes.
Again, perform this exercise at least once a day, and you should start to notice a gradual improvement in your vision.
For this exercise, you’ll want to find a comfortable chair in an interesting room. By that, we mean a room with lots of objects to look at. A living room with a good gallery wall or even your garden are good options.
Start at one side of your space and slowly scan everything in the room. Look at each object and try to take in every detail. Outline the entire object before you move to the next one.
For this exercise to work, make sure you look at each object very methodically. This will help you to focus on objects that are both close up and far away. You will strengthen all sorts of eye muscles that way!
Doing these eye exercises is one of the best ways to prevent myopia in children and adults. They are low (and even no) cost and can be very effective if done regularly. If you really want to amp up your efforts to improve your vision, you can add more eye exercises to your repertoire.
Also, it’s a good idea to start taking vision-enhancing vitamins to further strengthen your vision. Nearsightedness may seem like a hopeless diagnosis, but with a disciplined eye exercise regimen, you can take control of your vision!

Also, I can’t do it in the middle of the room since I can’t see any picture clearly no matter what if I stand in the middle of the room.

Thank you for sharing this useful information! Regularly exercising your eye muscles may actually help in improving your vision. It even helps in treating vision-related headaches, especially among people who have untreated nearsightedness.

Don’t blink while focusing on a close object.
Judy says:
I would stick with “neither” since you are trying to improve your vision. And wearing your prescribed lenses literally requires your eyes to be and stay bad, right? I’m on -5 for both eyes so yeah, not many objects to practice on, mostly I’m doing pencil exercises, moving further and closer quickly. I’m trying to recognize the movement my eyes do when I move it further and then apply it on other things, even if I cannot see them clearly. I think it ‘s really working, though progress is slow, after 10 year of ignoring the problem.

You just can’t stop your eye from blinking..
